Welcome
to the Sixties! * Recommended by Travel with Humor * Have you got your “Hairspray” on? Sacramento does! Jump back to the 1960’s with the California Musical Theater and visit Music Circus at the Wells Fargo Pavilion in Sacramento. Filled with explosive energy, “Hairspray” the Tony Award-winning best musical of 2003, transports the entire audience, from young teens to the young-at-heart through time. Tracy Turnblad (played by Joline Mujica), is a sixteen-year-old girl who doesn’t quite ‘fit the mold’ but has dreams like most teenage girls. Dealing with social issues of the 1960’s, young love, and a ‘few extra pounds’, Tracy makes choices that affect everyone around her in profound ways. Fans of the “Hairspray” movie will have a pleasant surprise, with all their favorite familiar musical numbers and some additional ones that weren’t included in the movie. The opening night performance was outstanding, and the performers very well-suited to their parts. Belting out addictive songs such as “Good Morning Baltimore,” “Welcome to the 60’s,” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” the talented cast had the audience tapping their toes, laughing and singing along, lasting all the way through intermission in the hallways. Paul Vogt plays Edna Turnblad with a sharp, sarcastic wit that leaves the audience in stitches. Young Tracy is excellently portrayed by Joline Mujica, who is full of the energy and enthusiasm characteristic of the role. With an excellent performance by the entire cast, it would be difficult to choose a favorite. However, one of the most talked-about was a heart-breaking, soulful rendition of “I know Where I’ve Been,” by Sacramento area native Inga Ballard, playing Motormouth Maybelle. If you haven’t ventured out to Music Circus yet, put your loafers on and hurry out there! Providing a unique experience from start to finish, this 360° theater surrounds the circular stage in the middle, giving every seat in the house a great view. “Hairspray” runs August 19 through 28th in Sacramento. For tickets, call (916) 557-1999 or go to www.SacramentoMusicCircus.com. This musical is best suited for ages 14 and above. Children under 4 are not permitted. Keep checking on their website for their 2009 season shows!
